“Management” is so twentieth century
In his book Drive, Daniel Pink dares to suggest that Management is an out of date concept. Let's examine this idea and see how it can make us world beating.
From the beginning of the Industrial Revolution we asked people to do work they really didn't like doing. The only way we could get them to do it and to do it efficiently was to use a combination of carrot and stick.
That was fine for repetive tasks but, according to Pink and many others he quotes, simply doesn't work for the creative work that most workers now do.
We need to develop the intrinsic motivation of our people. To do this we need to provide:
- Autonomy
- Mastery
- Purpose
